Beim Missouri Photo Workshop wurde den Vortragenden die Frage gestellt, was denn nun eigentlich die Story genau sei. Ich habe hier die meiner Meinung nach wichtigsten Punkte zusammengefasst.

Mary Anne Golon, Photography Consultant:

What not the story is also what people are doing, rather than people are being. I think a lot of the stories I’ve heard about are too process oriented. [...] What we are trying is to do is going a level deeper, into what not the actions, but into what the persons are thinking. [...] Finding the right story is the most important thing.

Melissa Farlow, National Geographic:

I think that a lot of the mistakes people make are giving us a list what people do during the day. And think that is the story. [...] Even if the follow them, they may not get a story out of that, because we don’t just wanna see what the people do, we wanna see who they are.

David Griffin, National Geographic:

Going to a parade and photographing the parade, you’re just bringing back what everyone else sees and that’s not the thing to do. You need to be looking around the edges of that parade and finding the things that nobody else sees, because that’s the whole value of you to be there as photographer.

David Rees, MPW-Editor:

The story is not a chronology about someones life. A story is not a series of pictures with someone doing something. A story would be a opertunity to provide a greater portrait and an indepth understanding who someone is.

Randy Cox, The Oregonian:

There are not really any bad stories, it’s how well they a researched and how passionate the individual photographer is about wanting to tell the story.
